First Human Bird Flu case in 2010

A laboratory-confirmed human case of avian influenza (H5N1) virus infection has been reported from Penkabaru in Sumatra, Indonesia. The patient, a 4-year-old child, has recovered but remains in hospital for observation. The child had been in contact with a dead backyard chicken.
This would be the 162nd case in Indonesia since 2005 and the 1st in 2010.
A suspected 2nd human case of avian influenza (H5N1) is being treated in the same hospital. The patient is severely ill and the outcome of laboratory tests is awaited.
